Because of the recent running I’ve done I’ve been visiting a few running type forums. One thing I always enjoy seeing is the fantastic sense of community these places build up.
I have been reading a few posts and people have been talking about injuries – whether it’s aching legs, foot fungus, runner’s bowel or simple aches and pains.
And the interesting thing is this: foot fungus antifungal treatment might not be the most pleasant condition to discuss, but it will be discussed with great sincerity. Same with runner’s bowel. Same with simple aches.
Because these people have developed relationships- never mind that they’ve probably never met – based on a mutual interests there is a real sense of closeness between them.
And that’s why social networks, like Cool Running, like MySpace, like many forums, will continue to flourish.
Because essentially we’re social beings. We like talking with others. We like sharing our experiences. We believe what others say, rather than believe an add.
It’s why word-of-mouth is the absolute best form of advertising. Because it’s believed. Because it’s trusted.
As a marketer, if you have a business you need to be part of social networks. Are you?
Cheers
