Our local coffee shop has been sold and the new owner is doing what most new owners do.
He’s shut the doors for a couple of weeks and has gutted the interior and is redeveloping the decor of the coffee shop. He is also giving the coffee shop a new name.
I’m never sure why coffee shop owners always seem to do that.
Sure, they probably want to put their own stamp on the decor. And maybe they didn’t like the name.
Could The Budget be Better Spent
Sure, people will buy the coffee because of the decor of the shop. But I’d suspect there are better ways to spend your budget.
And does anybody, in a suburban strip of shops, really buy their coffee in a particular place because of the name? (The major branded places aside.)
And renovations and name changes are expensive – you need to sell a lot of coffee to pay for them.
And if the coffee shop had a terrible reputation previously the first thing (and much cheaper) to do would be to put a “Under New Management” sign out the front.
Put on friendly staff. Get new uniforms. And make great coffee.

Definitely the key to making money from a coffee shop is to make great coffee.
Here in Hervey Bay one place on the main strip makes GREAT coffee while the rest serve recycled dishwater.
It shows in the number of bums on seats. One place is always packed while the rest look rather sad.
