Someone called today and asked “Are you the guy who speaks without sense…….errrr, I mean notes?”
The Weird Thing About Public Speaking
The weird thing about public speaking is that if you can do it without notes (or just a few key phrases jotted down), it’s a lot better than if you read it word perfect from notes.
You see, when you’re speaking without notes you put natural intonation and emphasis into your stories in the right spots.
You pause naturally (One of the things I used to build into my speeches was a pause for laughter – didn’t take me long to figure out that the audience will laugh when something amuses them, rather than when I think I just said something funny).
The speech seems so much more personal because it sounds natural.
The tricky thing, of course, is having the confidence to do a speech without notes.
Sure, it won’t be word perfect like the written speech, but I can guarantee it will be more natural and, because of that, almost certainly better.
Cheers
