When you first start out as a web designer/developer/whatever it’s daunting as you put your shingle out and try and interest any passing prospect.
Here’s the tips of a pro to get you started and on the way:
1. Pick a niche
I found myself with a niche market years ago and I’d have my client’s competitors contact me to do their web site as well.
As soon as you specialise you’re perceived as more of an expert and, thus, better.
2. Talk, talk, talk
Get out and meet people, talk to people and tell them what you do.
Hands up if you want to be a client
3. Identify 5 web sites in a week in your niche that you feel you could do better
Pick up the phone and call the owner and say just that.
4. Develop relationships with people who influence choice
An example is with the local computer repair guy. Find a good one and let them know you’ll refer business there way from now on.
Don’t ask for anything in return.
5. Start advertising
Spend as little as you possibly can and measure, measure, measure.
If you’re not sure whether an ad gave you any profitable business then you’re an idiot.
(And yes, sometimes I’m an idiot.)
6. Be different
It almost doesn’t matter how you’re different.
Stand out and get talked about.
7. Start becoming an expert
- Write a book
- Start a newsletter
- Do public speaking
- Get mentioned in the media as an expert
Okay, off you go and do those things.
Cheers
