Notes from Brendon – Web marketing based on 24 years of experience
Get people to your web site
That’s the gist of it. That’s the thing you have to do.
But just how do you get people to your web site?
Here’s what I do.
- I find out how people usually find out about web sites.
- Then I do that
This is how people usually find out about web sites:
- Search Engines
- Links from other sites
- Word of mouth
- Print media and advertisements
This is how we get people to our web sites
- Search Engines
- Links from other sites
- Word of mouth
- Print media and advertisements
Now I could talk for days on what you need to do for people to find your web site in search engines.
- key word identification
- key word density
- linking strategies
- pay per click models (AdWords)
- …the list goes on
Getting a high ranking within search engines can be a very, very important part of your web site marketing strategy. And search engine optimisation – that’s developing your site to rank as high as possible within search engines – is an art and a science.
You have a two- (2) options here:
- Learn how to optimise your web site for search engines yourself
- Employ an expert to optimise your site
Learning to optimise your web site yourself will take time. and it will take a lot of time. And once you know how search engines rank sites I bet they’ll play a little trick on you.
They’ll change how they rank web sites. That always hurts.
Which means you have to constantly keep up with how web sites are ranking sites, because they do change constantly.
In my business we spend many hours a week researching how search engines are ranking web sites. That’s an experienced internet marketer doing the research. And we only do that to keep on top of what’s happening.
Now optimising web sites for top search engine rankings isn’t within the resources of the vast majority of businesses with web sites, so many decide to out-source this.
Just who should you get to help?
Here you have the big decision to make. Just who do you get to optimise your site. And what should you pay.
I’ll address who you should get to optimise your site first.
Most internet marketers will tell you how fabulous they are. But there is only one- (1) way to assess if the internet marketer really knows what he is talking about.
What success has he/she had in the past?
That’s important because the best indicator of future performance is past performance.
If the marketer can show how they have been successful with search engine optimisation for other sites, then they are worth having a chat with.
If they can’t, then move on – no matter how much they say they can do for you. If they can do it, they would have already done it.
(Before I go on, anyone who says they can guarantee a number one- (1) position on the major search engines is not being truthful. I know as much about search engine optimisation as anyone and I never guarantee top spot.
There are so many variables, and they change so often, that it’s simply impossible to guarantee # 1 ranking. We always get our clients a very high rankings, but we simply cannot offer a guarantee because there are elements out of our control – mostly the frequent Google changes and then there’s what you’re competitors are doing.)
Hope that helps.
